Many people pass over Modesto when they're planning their vacations in California, simply because they don't know any of the places to visit or things to do here. With this webpage, we hope to remedy that problem. When you're finished reading about all the interesting places to visit in Modesto, you'll be calling up your boss at the license plate cover factory to ask for a week or two of vacation so you can come down here and check it out. Modesto attractions are a fascinating look into California life, both today and in the past.
McHenry Mansion and Museum
On the corner of 15th and I streets in Modesto sits a sprawling mansion and the accompanying structure that used to be the town library. Built in 1883 in the Italianate and Victorian styles, these buildings are a sight to behold even from the outside. Inside you'll see life as it was before the invention of time and frequency standards. There's a smithy, gold mine, general store, and even a dentist's office along with relics such as clothing, possessions, artwork, and memoirs left behind by pioneer era residents. Stop by the gift shop to take home a souvenir of old California.
Great Valley Museum
On the corner of Stoddard and College Avenues is a great museum that will be a fun visit for the whole family. The Great Valley Museum, which is attached to Modesto Junior College, features natural history, specifically of the Modesto, California area. Here you can entice the kids away from moaning about missing their ice hockey camps to learn about the animals of the world in the museum's permanent exhibit. Another permanent exhibit introduces you to the habitats of the valley in which Modesto resides, a unique biosphere.
Castle Air Museum
Another great place to take the kids, or to take anyone with an interest in aviation, is the Castle Air Museum. It was created after the closure of Castle Air Force Base, but don't worry - you won't need any lead aprons to visit. Everything's been lovingly restored and there are more than forty airplanes for you to explore including famous names like the World War II Era B-25 Mitchell, a rare example of the delta winged Avro Vulcan, and even a CF-100 Canuck. Visit for a tour and a stop into the gift shop or try one of their special events, like a waffle brunch.
Tour of the City
Hop in your rental car after the How to Get Cash for Scrap Gold seminar and see the city's points of interest, including the Modesto Arch, depression era post office, green park and rose garden, bronze statues, and the inspiration for the movie American Graffiti.
